TOURNEZ, TOURNEZ!
(Turn Around, Turn Around!)

About the piece
On the surface, “Tournez, Tournez!” is a piece about a carousel turning around, bedecked with colorful wooden horses. The riders are crying, “Turn around!” (“Tournez, tournez!”) “Turn a hundred times!” (“Tournez cent!”). Night soon falls, the merriment subsides, and the people go home. Then another day dawns (“Aurora calls”) , the carousel starts to turn, and excitement begins all over again! The percussion emulates the sounds of whirring machines and people scurrying about in a carnival atmosphere.

On a deeper level (if one reads the rather lengthy “Chevaux de bois” poem) I the text is a commentary on the self-imposed chaos of much of our lives - just going around in never ending circles, while still desiring to do more (“go faster”) ! Life slows down just long enough for sleep, and the next morning the frenzy begins allover again in this foolish circus of life.

About the text

Turn around, turn around!
“Tournez, tournez!” [turn around, turn around]

Turn around, turn around
Wooden horses!
Carousel, turn in a blur unending!
“Tournez cent, tournez toujours!” [turn a hundred times, turn forever!]

Turn around the oboe!
Turn around the drum!
“Tournez, tournez!”

Le gars en noir et la fille en rose, [ the boy in black and girl in red]
L'une a la chose et I'au tra la. [one casually standing, one striking a pose]

The night falls, church bells toll.
“Tournez, tournez!”
Horses and carousel,
Young and old go to sleep.

Aurora* calls! “Retournez!” [Return]
“Tournez, tournez!”
Wooden horses!“Tournez!”

* Aurora -goddess of dawn
