Two Puccini Psalms-Instrumental parts
Domine ad Adjuvandum, Dixit Dominus
Composed by Giacomo Puccini Edited by Martin Banner Voicing: SATB Instrumentation: 2 violins, viola, cello, bass and continuo Catalog number: AMP 0282P Price: $15.00 EDITOR'S NOTE The Italian town of Lucca was the birthplace of one of opera's most famous composers, Giacomo Puccini. However, this creator of Madame Butterfly and Tosca was in fact the fifth generation of composers in the Puccini family. This musical family tree included Giacomo Puccini "senior" (greatgreatgrandfather of the opera composer), Antonio Puccini (greatgrandfather), Domenico Puccini (grandfather) and Michele Puccini (father). Each of these composers was concerned primarily with creating sacred works for religious worship in Lucca. Giacomo Puccini "senior" (1712-1781) lived his entire life in Lucca. His early musical studies were with Caret ti of Bologna. He served as organist at the church of San Martino as well as director of the Cappella Palatina. In 1743, Puccini became a member of the Bologna Accademia Filarmonica. His sacred works alternate counterpoint with homophonic texture, and demonstrate striking harmonic changes to illustrate the text. 1. Domine Ad Adjuvandum (Ps.70:1) -Lord, be quick to help me. This edition is based upon the autograph score located in the library of the Istituto Musicale "L. Boccherini" in Lucca, Italy, F.P .G.33. The present edition adheres closely to the above mentioned source, noting editorial markings in parentheses. Voice parts, notated in moveable clefs, were rewritten in treble clef; where text was indicated in only one voice part, the text has been written out in full; repeated text, indicated only by the symbol- ,was written out in full; phrase markings were added in the voice parts where two or more notes occur for a single syllable of text; the piano reduction was prepared from the orchestral material. The editor is indebted to Dr. Giulio Battelli, librarian at the Istituto Musicale "L. Boccherini" in Lucca, for allowing me access to the Puccini Family manuscript collection to examine the autograph score in Lucca, supplying me with microfilm of the original manuscript, as well as giving me permission to publish.
