EDITOR'S NOTE

The Italian town of Lucca was the birthplace of one of opera's most famous composers, Giacomo Puccini. However, this creator of Madame Butterfly and Tosca was in fact the fifth generation of composers in the Puccini family. This musical family tree included Giacomo Puccini "senior" (greatgreatgrandfather of the opera composer), Antonio Puccini (greatgrandfather), Domenico Puccini (grandfather) and Michele Puccini (father). Each of these composers was concerned primarily with creating sacred works for religious worship in Lucca.

Giacomo Puccini "senior" (1712-1781) lived his entire life in Lucca. His early musical studies were with Caret ti of Bologna. He served as organist at the church of San Martino as well as director of the Cappella Palatina. In 1743, Puccini became a member of the Bologna Accademia Filarmonica. His sacred works alternate counterpoint with homophonic texture, and demonstrate striking harmonic changes to illustrate the text.

Psalms for SATB chorus, 2 violins, viola, cello and bass, were composed in 1777, and include settings of the following Psalms: 70:1,110, 111,112,113, 116, 117, 122, 127, 148. Each Psalm concludes with the Gloria Patri, followed by a final setting of the Magnificat. The translation of the two Psalms is as follows:

1. Domine Ad Adjuvandum (Ps.70:1) -Lord, be quick to help me.
2. Dixit Dominus (Ps.110) -The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies into your footstool. The Lord will send the rod of your power forth from Zion. Rule in the middle of your enemies. The power is your's on the day of your strength, in the splendour of the holy ones. I have given birth to you from the womb before the coming of the light. The Lord has sworn and will not take it back. You are a priest for eternity , according to the order of Melchisedech. The Lord at your right hand destroys kings on the day of his anger. He will judge the nations, will pile up ruins and scatter heads on many lands. He will drink from the torrent in his way, he will lift up his head.

This edition is based upon the autograph score located in the library of the Istituto Musicale "L. Boccherini" in Lucca, Italy, F.P .G.33. The title page of the manuscript reads as follows: Salmi a 4 Voci, Con Violini a beneplacto:/ Per uso della Chiesina di LLo:EEze/ Vi Giacomo Puccini Mstro di Capla della Serenma: Repca:/ e Accademico Filarmco: di Bologna: 1777: (the abbreviation LLo.EEze stands for Your Excellency, and refers to the members of the Senate of the Republic of Lucca).

The present edition adheres closely to the above mentioned source, noting editorial markings in parentheses. Voice parts, notated in moveable clefs, were rewritten in treble clef; where text was indicated in only one voice part, the text has been written out in full; repeated text, indicated only by the symbol- ,was written out in full; phrase markings were added in the voice parts where two or more notes occur for a single syllable of text; the piano reduction was prepared from the orchestral material.

The editor is indebted to Dr. Giulio Battelli, librarian at the Istituto Musicale "L. Boccherini" in Lucca, for allowing me access to the Puccini Family manuscript collection to examine the autograph score in Lucca, supplying me with microfilm of the original manuscript, as well as giving me permission to publish.
