Ladino, the language of the Sephardic Jews, is based on Old Spanish and is written in the Hebrew script. It is generally pronounced like modern-day Spanish. Exceptions are below:

  • the letter j in “mujer” is like the French j in “bon jour.”
  • the letter z in “hermoza,” “vez,” and “otra vez” is pronounced as an English z
  • the letter s in “corason” is pronounced as an English z
Yo m'enamori d'un aire,
D'un aire d'una mujer,
D'una mujer muy hermoza
Linda de mi corason.

Yo m'enamori de noche,
El lunar ya m'engano.
Si esto era de dia,
Yo no atava amor.

Si otra vez m'enamoro
D'un aire d'una mujer,
D'una mujer muy hermoza
Linda de mi corason,
Sea de dia con sol
Si otra vez m'enamoro.
             I fell in love with
the charms of a woman,
Of a very beautiful woman,
The beauty of my heart.

I fell in love at night.
The moonlight was my undoing.
If it had been in daylight
Love would not have bound me.

If I fall in love again
With the charms of a woman,
Of a very beautiful woman,
The beauty of my heart,
It will be by daylight with sunshine.
If I fall in love again.
