Though widely regarded today as Scotlands's national poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent much of his life working in various trades, including as farmer, exciseman, and even flax-dresser. His colorful life included the many women he became involved with, but it was Jean Armour who married him (above her parents' concerns), bore him nine children, moved with him to a farm in western Scotland, and stayed by his side at his premature death, bearing him his last son that very same day. Burns indubitably loved Jean, who inspired many of his poems. The present was written around 1788 after an absence from home. Like the many Burns inspired in his own time, this present-day setting of Jean is, first and foremost, a song, whose lyrical melody always remains front and center.
