* Pique bandeira is a kind of child's play, where two teams run around and try to “steal” the other team's flag.

About the song

I wrote this piece for an old friend, Nina Revering, who directs the Conspirare Children's Choir in Austin, Texas. She and her family lived in Rio during our childhood. The name “Tijuca” in the song title is the neighborhood we lived in, where I, nowadays, raise my own kids. We sang together in a local children's choir. In one of the group's songs, Nina had a solo, that said “Let's play the carousel, everybody,” a phrase quoted on this chart.

Years ago, looking at some old pictures at my parent's home, I came across a photo of Nina (who was probably 5 or 6 years old at the time) jumping in the air, about to fall on the grass. That image made me miss those days, but also reminded me to be always very grateful for having been allowed a childhood full of play, fun, and creativity.

That is why I wrote this song. We grow up, become adults, raise families, and many responsibilities get in sight, sometimes blurring the view of the really important things in life. But the memories created when we are kids are the ones that stay deeper, and help us keep things in the right perspective. For me, these remembrances are the ones to relate to when in need of a smile. It is sure a time to be lived thoroughly. The feeling of being a kid should never leave us!
