Donald Bailey

DONALD BAILEY is Director of Choral Activities, Director of the Vocal Division, and the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Music at Baylor University where he conducts the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, and teaches choral conducting. His choirs have appeared with the Rochester (NY) Philharmonic Orchestra, the Buffalo (NY) Philharmonic, the Phoenix (AZ) Symphony Orchestra, the El Paso (TX) Symphony Orchestra, the Lubbock (TX) Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of Santa Fe (NM). He holds the distinction of three invitations for his choirs to appear at the prestigious National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. His choirs have also performed at the Texas Music Educators Association, the New York State School Music Association, the Arizona Music Educators Association, the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and the Music Educators National Conference. Prior to coming to Baylor University in l993, he was Director of Choirs at Arizona State University, Texas Tech University, Houghton College (New York) and Eastern New Mexico University.

Particularly active as a guest conductor and clinician, he has conducted over three hundred and fifty clinics in the last ten years and frequently appears as an All State Clinician having most recently conducted All State Choirs in Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, and Texas. His recent clinics in church music have included Mo-Ranch (Presbyterian), the Dallas Baptist Association, Lover's Lane United Methodist Church (Dallas), and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Bailey received his Bachelor of Music Education summa cum laude and Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from Eastern New Mexico University and his Doctor of Arts in Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to post-graduate study at Indiana University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Westminster Choir College, he has done additional study with Paul Christiansen and Robert Shaw. He received a special merit raise for Excellence in Teaching and Creative Activity at Arizona State University and at Houghton College was twice named the Outstanding Faculty Member by the Student Senate, the Teacher of the Year by the Music Alumni, and was designated an Outstanding Educator in America.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Bailey is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Music Educators National Conference, Texas Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, and serves as the current Vice President of the High School/College Division of the Texas Choral Directors Association.
